Two Are Better Than One

I am looking forward to welcoming Friar Luis among us. He will be a great help and support for me as I will be for him.

Resurrection Resurrección

“Resurrection” Here I am sitting in our living room watching the movie “Mission” with my brother friars. It’s a very difficult movie to watch. It deals with a group of good and compassionate Jesuit priests who are missionaries to indigenous peoples in South America. It’s also the tale of the injustices that the indigenous people were forced to suffer by the Spanish and Portuguese Crowns. The injustices were so brutal that the priests themselves took on arms to defend the indigenous. Yet their faith in God never waivered and they were totally dedicated to justice as they thought God wanted to them to protect. There are many scenes that just break your heart. There’s one in particular that leaves you numb with so many thoughts running through...

Christ’s Humility / La humildad de Cristo

Let Christ’s Humility and Peace Enter Your Heart What a wonderful way to begin Holy Week with a couple of our parishioners sharing something of their spiritual journey with the rest of us. I hope many more of you will do the same. You can even write about what it means for you to be a Catholic, a member of St. Julia Parish, what does our parish community mean for you, and even sharing about how you have grown as a person and as a person of faith. Our stories can help and inspire others. I hope you will consider it. Here we are on Palm Sunday, the beginning of the most solemn week of the year. We have spent 5 weeks in Lent. How have we...

Accepting Challenges Aceptando desafíos

Good Challenges Are Sometimes Hard to Swallow I recently read an article in which there appeared a picture of a church sign that read: “Kind Atheists are Closer to Jesus than Mean Christians.” It challenged me in many ways. What about you?  What do you think of this statement?  What feelings and thoughts rise within you? For me, it first made me dig deep in what I think of atheists and explore my sentiments and prejudices. It humbled me because I found certain elements within me that were judgmental and unkind. It led me to ask myself: “Who am I to make such conclusions? What business is it of mine to pass judgment on a person’s beliefs?” Isn’t it my Christian responsibility to simply love and accept the...

Spiritual Influences Influencias Espirituales

Spiritual Influences Who has influenced your spirituality? Who are the wonderful people in your life that have helped you develop your spirituality? That taught you about God. That shared their faith with you. That taught you how to pray. That have inspired you in your Catholic Christian life. We all have these wonderful people in our lives. Some of them influenced us just by the way they lived and the example they gave us. So, during this Lent, let’s bring them into our prayers and lift them up to God with much gratitude in our hearts. And…let us also ask for the grace we need to be, like them, a good influence in other people’s life and faith. I have many people to thank for influencing my faith and...

Read and Choose Lee y elige

From the Heart Read and Choose. I will soon send an image of St. Francis of Assisi to be enlarged according to the measurements that we need. The image of St. Francis will hang together with the image of St. Julia in the sanctuary of our church. I’m asking you to vote for your favorite from the images I provide for you. All you have to do is to put the number of the image on a piece of paper and drop it in the box we will provide at the main church entrance. Your recommendation will give me insight. Here they are: #1: The embrace between St. Francis and the Crucified Christ. #2: St Francis among black bird, dog, and flowers. #3: St. Francis holding dove and dog. #4: Side view of...
