The Season of Advent / Temporada de Adviento

The Season of Advent On Sunday, December 1st we begin the Advent Season. As we all know, Advent is a time of spiritual preparation for the Feast of the Incarnation. Our theme for Advent is “Bringing Jesus into the World.” Our church will be decorated with a banner that depicts a pregnant Mary with a very loving and protecting St. Joseph. The image is meant to inspire our spiritual preparation just as a married couple prepares for the birth of their child. During pregnancy, much care is given to both the mother and the child. I imagine that both parents also prepare psychologically, emotionally, physically, financially, spiritually for the arrival of the new life. Such preparation is a beautiful time in the life of the parents...

A Few New Things /Algunas novedades

A Few New Things Spiritual Growth and Formation Soon I will announce new initiatives and opportunities that we will have available in our parish or our spiritual growth and formation. These new opportunities will be for adults, young adults, high school youth, and our younger children. It is my hope that you will participate in these new opportunities. We can’t just leave things as they are. If we are to grow as a community and as a community of faith, we need to be attentive to the needs of all in our community. For example: We need to develop activities in English for young English-speaking families who are and will be joining the parish. We simply need to reach out to everyone and respond to our present and...

Halloween

“Halloween” Let’s have a little fun, but I warn you because this little mind of mine which has the tendency to question everything and is extremely curious will probably take me to say things that can challenge you. So here we go with a little reflection on Halloween. The Catholic News Agency has two articles on Halloween. One is titled: “Spooky, scary, saintly? How Catholics can see Halloween at its best.” The other is titled: “Costumes of demons, witches, and the dead open the door to the devil, priest says.” When you read both articles, they seem to be a bit contradictory although there may be some things that they have in common, but you have to look carefully to find the commonalities. When did Halloween become so...

“The Soul’s Whispered Longing” / El anhelo susurrado del alma

“The Soul’s Whispered Longing” / El anhelo susurrado del alma The soul’s longing and yearning is soft but strong. To be felt, it requires focused attention and conscious attentive presence. Awakened attentiveness is the key to sensing our souls’ desire which is nothing less than union with God. Not enough people of faith are aware of this wonderful and powerful reality in their lives. We, unfortunately, are not often taught nor formed to be attentive to our soul’s longing. For this reason, we go about life and go about our spiritual journey without being conscious of it. This has been kept (almost) secret within the walls of monasteries where people who dedicate their lives to prayer and to the search for God live. Little by little this wonderfully...

“I need your understanding, patience, and cooperation.” / “Necesito de vuestra comprensión, paciencia y cooperación.”

An Open Letter to the Parish Community: “I need your understanding, patience, and cooperation.” My dear sisters and brothers in faith, I write this letter to you with the desire to better serve you within the reality that is now ours. Our parish community is growing and with the growth comes an increase of my obligations to you as more and more people have need of my time and presence. I’m so grateful to God and to you for the trust that you have in me and for allowing me to accompany you. It is my hope that you will always have me as a pastor that is available and present to you in your needs. I am here to minister to you. Yet, I am...
