Lectio Divina: Una línea directa con Dios, Una misión posible

In this weeks readings (14th Sunday in Ordinary Time yr C  Luke 10:1-12, 17-20) we find that God sends his followers out ahead of Him to ready the people, to prepare them for his coming.

Although we might see this as a super chance for His apostles to go out on an awesome road trip, today it would compare to the reality show “Survivor” meets “The Real World”.

In Luke’s account of Jesus sending them out two by two, seventy-two followers to proclaim God’s reign and to heal others, they are met with huge challenges. Jesus tells them to go out like lambs among wolves: no money, no food, no sandals, and to rely on the generosity of others for their needs. Jesus tells them to shake the dust from their feet if they aren’t received, acknowledging they’ll also face much resistance. Unfortunately in todays society of mistrust and despondence, the apostles would be starving and cold on the streets, but with very clean shoes!

But regardless of todays attitudes, Jesus’ words to commission us out to the world, shows that we are being sent as pilgrims to those around us. For us to speak words of welcome and wholeness, and to bear witness to God’s love, justice, peace, and joy. As we go out to a world full of distrust, individualism, greed, and division, where our words and presence are not received and welcomed, He directs us to respond to all who wound us with compassion and to be hospitable to them.

Today, we spend so much of our time trying to relate to our families and friends and others around us. We see the terrible news and hear a call for truth and tolerance in times of violence all over the world. We are called to use our gifts to be of service to others, but with our preoccupied lives, it pushes us outside of our comfort zone and can be overwhelming to even think about taking on more of God’s challenges for us.

This is when we have a choice to turn towards the truth of God’s presence and God’s Divine Providence. Whatever difficulty lies before us, God is there, watching us, loving us, and delighting in us. But how do we know that He is there with us? How do we communicate with Him to know what we are doing is the right thing? That we are not just going out blindly?

The practice of Lectio Divina helps us to rest in God’s caring and compassionate gaze BEFORE turning to these life missions. With Lectio Divina, we can connect directly to God without reaching for our phones, tablets or social media accounts. We can listen for God’s uplifting voice through the words He spoke, and seek reassurance of His presence.

En las lecturas de esta semana (14.º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario, año C, Lucas 10:1-12, 17-20), vemos que Dios envía a sus seguidores delante de Él para preparar al pueblo para su venida.

Si bien podríamos considerar esta una gran oportunidad para que sus apóstoles emprendieran un viaje increíble por carretera, hoy sería como una fusión entre el reality show “Survivor” y “The Real World”.

En el relato de Lucas, Jesús los envía de dos en dos, setenta y dos seguidores, a proclamar el reino de Dios y sanar a otros; se enfrentan a enormes desafíos. Jesús les dice que salgan como corderos en medio de lobos: sin dinero, sin comida, sin sandalias, y que dependan de la generosidad de los demás para sus necesidades. Jesús les dice que se sacudan el polvo de los pies si no son recibidos, reconociendo que también enfrentarán mucha resistencia. Desafortunadamente, en la sociedad actual de desconfianza y desaliento, los apóstoles pasarían hambre y frío en las calles, ¡pero con los zapatos impecables!

Pero independientemente de las actitudes actuales, las palabras de Jesús al enviarnos al mundo demuestran que somos enviados como peregrinos a quienes nos rodean. Para que pronunciemos palabras de bienvenida y plenitud, y demos testimonio del amor, la justicia, la paz y la alegría de Dios. Al salir a un mundo lleno de desconfianza, individualismo, avaricia y división, donde nuestras palabras y nuestra presencia no son recibidas ni bienvenidas, Él nos guía a responder con compasión a todos los que nos hieren y a ser hospitalarios con ellos.

Hoy, dedicamos gran parte de nuestro tiempo a intentar conectar con nuestras familias, amigos y demás personas que nos rodean. Vemos las terribles noticias y escuchamos un llamado a la verdad y la tolerancia en tiempos de violencia en todo el mundo. Estamos llamados a usar nuestros dones para servir a los demás, pero nuestras vidas ocupadas nos obligan a salir de nuestra zona de confort y puede ser abrumador incluso pensar en asumir más desafíos que Dios nos ha encomendado.

Es entonces cuando tenemos la opción de volvernos hacia la verdad de la presencia de Dios y su Divina Providencia. Cualquiera que sea la dificultad que enfrentemos, Dios está ahí, observándonos, amándonos y deleitándose en nosotros. Pero ¿cómo sabemos que Él está con nosotros? ¿Cómo nos comunicamos con Él para saber que lo que hacemos es correcto? ¿Que no estamos actuando a ciegas?

La práctica de la Lectio Divina nos ayuda a descansar en la mirada compasiva y amorosa de Dios ANTES de emprender estas misiones de vida. Con la Lectio Divina, podemos conectarnos directamente con Dios sin recurrir a nuestros teléfonos, tabletas o redes sociales. Podemos escuchar la voz inspiradora de Dios a través de sus palabras y buscar la seguridad de su presencia.
