Ashes On Our Hearts 💜 Cenizas en Nuestros Corazones

💜Ashes On Our Hearts💜 Let your heart lead you into Lent. Follow the way of your heart. Let your heart speak to you. Give your heart the freedom to speak to you and to lead you. Lent is more than just a time. Lent is meant to be an experience, an encounter with God in the depth of your heart. The spiritual path of an individual is often referred to as the path of the heart. The heart is that place within us where everything we experience is felt. It is the place where memories are also felt and not just remembered. The heart is that part of our life wherein we feel blessed or broken. It is a fragile place, a holy place, the most...

Lent: Making it Meaningful/ Cuaresma: Haciéndolo Significativo

Lent: How Can We Make it Meaningful We all know that Lent is a time of spiritual preparation and spiritual discipline. The sacrifices and the acts of penance that we are called to practice during Lent are meant to help us give deeper meaning and importance to our spiritual journey and our spiritual practices. These sacrifices are also meant to elevate our minds and hearts to greater charity and compassion with those who are suffering and in need. The Christian path never separates the spiritual path toward union with God from our compassionate union with one another. We walk hand in hand with each other toward God. Lent is a time to practice spiritual discipline for the sake of creating a larger space for God within our lives...

An Open Letter / Carta Abierta

An Open Letter to the Parish Community / Carta abierta a la Comunidad Parroquial Ver más abajo en español My dear sisters and brothers, Rarely do I write an open letter to the entire parish community, but I do so now out of concern and love for our youth. I also speak to parents, family members, and friends of our youth because the topic that I wish to speak to you about requires everyone’s attention and consideration. It’s an important and serious one. It’s one that is not easy to speak about. I often think about the reality that in the almost eight years that I have been here at St. Julia as pastor, most of the people that have died and buried from our church have been relatively young....

We Are Blessed / Somos Bendecidos

We Are Blessed The Bishop’s Annual Appeal is about to begin again and we, at St. Julia, have already surpassed our goal! How did we do that? How did we do it without making a big deal out of it? We did it slowly, carefully, setting money aside every week and every month with a monthly second collection, with gifts and donations from individuals and families. All in all, we did it by the beautiful, peaceful, and organic generosity of all of you. We can feel humbly proud of having done our part in contributing to the Catholic family of our Diocese. I’m very proud and grateful to all of us. What would we do without US! Now, I have to address an issue closer to home. As...

Read This Face? / ¿Lees esta cara?

Read This Face? / ¿Lees esta cara? I can’t help but see so much frustration and despair in the face of this woman. I don’t know if her closed fist is a sign of anger or something even more intense. Her reaction appears to be a response to something awful. Something that leaves a person in despair for reasons that attack the heart and mind with brutal force. In many ways this picture captures for me how many feel in our country today. If you could put a caption on this picture, what would it say? (Don’t read any further. Answer the question first). Continue reading: If this woman was a loving and caring Christian woman who took the message of Jesus seriously, what would the caption say? Now, compare your...
