Surrender and Simplicity:
Finding Peace the Franciscan Way

When life feels heavy or overwhelming, it is usually because we are trying to carry the weight that was never meant to be ours to carry. In this diagram, we see a clear boundary between what is inside our circle of control and what lies outside of it. So much of our stress stems from living outside of that circle.

We spend so much energy worrying about the future, trying to fix or change other people, stressing over outcomes, and the worst- replaying the past in our minds. Yet none of these things belong in our hands. They belong to God.

St. Francis of Assisi prayed, “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.” But to truly become that instrument, we must learn to surrender.
To live in the Franciscan faith is to embrace a path of simplicity, humility, and radical trust in God’s plan. St. Francis understood that true freedom does not come from controlling our surroundings, but from uncluttering the baggage we have.

Looking at the outer ring in the diagram we are reminded that God does not ask us to manage His timing, dictate how others perceive us, or control another person’s growth. When we work so hard trying to direct all these external forces, we lose the very peace Christ promised us.

TRUE spiritual peace starts when we draw a boundary between OUR responsibility and God’s providence. The Gospel calls us to focus entirely on what God has placed within our circle:

  • Believing His Word
  • Walking by faith each day
  • Taking our thoughts captive when anxiety creeps in
  • Praying with courage
  • Choosing to love all people, especially those right in front of us

At the heart of this inner work is our choice to practice unconditional kindness and, above all, radical forgiveness. Holding onto the past or waiting for others to change keeps our own hearts captive. When we choose to release the outer burdens, we choose to forgive. We release what is out of our control, and surrender outcomes, past hurts, other people and the future into the hands of the Father—we free up our hearts to give Him our full trust.

St. Francis did not try to control the world around him; he simply chose to be a quiet mirror of Christ’s love.
When we relinquish our grip on how we think things “should” turn out, we begin to see the grace present in each moment.

Rest is not found in having everything figured out; it is found in knowing the One who holds it all.
Use this diagram as a daily reflection. Choose forgiveness over resentment, kindness over judgment, and faithful action over worry.
Let go of the burdens you were never meant to carry, and place everything outside of our circle into the loving hands of the Father.

He holds all things together.

Entrega y sencillez:

Pertenece a Dios.
