Cross vs Crucifix…Whats the difference? / Cruz vs Crucifijo…¿Cuál es la diferencia?

It’s Sunday, and we walk into church for Sunday Mass. Another week gone. Another one starting.  We sit down in our usual seats and wait, looking up at the altar. Nothing has changed except for the flowers. We notice a new bottle of water sitting up behind the priest’s chair. Oh wait! I forgot to genuflect! O well… I’m already sitting. I’ll do it when I leave.

Growing up we are taught about the cross, and Jesus’ crucifixion at Easter. But sometimes, the meaning doesn’t always “sink in”. 

As Catholic Christians, we believe that the cross and the crucifix both represent Christ’s supreme act of love and sacrifice for ALL of humanity’s sins… past, present and future.

• It is how God brings humanity back to Him.
• It is a symbol of victory over sin and death.
• It is a reminder of the great and endless love of God.
• It is a call to live a good and Christian life.
• It is a symbol for us to endure hardship with our faith. 

But there IS A HUGE difference between each of them! The empty cross symbolizes our faith and Jesus’ victory over death by his resurrection. The crucifix symbolizes the sacrifice and suffering of Jesus’ crucifixion.

While the symbolism of the crucifix seems a bit more somber than that of the cross, we have to consider how our faith and love of God and of each other can quickly be overshadowed by trials and tribulations.  (especially in times of trouble and despair)

Knowing, seeing, understanding and accepting that Jesus’ suffering on the cross was for us, we are reminded that everything we go through here on earth, (good and bad), is felt by God.   (Psalm 34:18  Isaiah 49:15  John 11:35)

So why do so many people treat the cross differently? Some will hang it on the wall at home dusting it off once in a while, while others will pray daily in front of the image or make the sign of the cross as they pass by it. Some will wear a pendent of a cross/crucifix everyday because it was a gift from their Mom, while others will put permanent images of it on their skin as a constant reminder of their faith journey.

No matter how we see it, no matter how we use the cross/crucifix, we are ALL called as Catholic Christians to understand in our hearts what His Cross truly means.

Es domingo y entramos a la iglesia para la misa dominical. Otra semana se fue. Otra comenzó. Nos sentamos en nuestros asientos habituales y esperamos, mirando hacia el altar. Nada ha cambiado, excepto las flores. Vemos una botella de agua nueva detrás de la silla del sacerdote. ¡Oh, espera! ¡Olvidé hacer la genuflexión! Bueno… Ya estoy sentado. Lo haré cuando me vaya.

De niños, nos enseñan sobre la cruz y la crucifixión de Jesús en Pascua. Pero a veces, el significado no siempre se asimila.

Como cristianos católicos, creemos que tanto la cruz como el crucifijo representan el acto supremo de amor y sacrificio de Cristo por TODOS los pecados de la humanidad… pasados, presentes y futuros.

• Es la forma en que Dios trae a la humanidad de regreso a Él.
• Es un símbolo de victoria sobre el pecado y la muerte.
• Es un recordatorio del gran e infinito amor de Dios.
• Es un llamado a vivir una vida buena y cristiana.
• Es un símbolo para que soportemos las dificultades con nuestra fe.

¡Pero hay una enorme diferencia entre cada una! La cruz vacía simboliza nuestra fe y la victoria de Jesús sobre la muerte mediante su resurrección. El crucifijo simboliza el sacrificio y el sufrimiento de la crucifixión de Jesús.

Si bien el simbolismo del crucifijo parece un poco más sombrío que el de la cruz, debemos considerar cómo nuestra fe y amor por Dios y por los demás pueden verse rápidamente eclipsados ​​por las pruebas y las tribulaciones (especialmente en tiempos de dificultad y desesperación).

Saber, ver, comprender y aceptar que el sufrimiento de Jesús en la cruz fue por nosotros, nos recuerda que Dios siente todo lo que pasamos aquí en la tierra (bueno o malo). (Salmo 34:18; Isaías 49:15; Juan 11:35)

Entonces, ¿por qué tanta gente trata la cruz de manera diferente? Algunos la colgarán en la pared de casa, quitándole el polvo de vez en cuando, mientras que otros rezarán a diario frente a la imagen o se persignarán al pasar junto a ella. Algunos llevarán un colgante de una cruz/crucifijo a diario porque fue un regalo de su madre, mientras que otros se lo pondrán permanentemente en la piel como recordatorio constante de su camino de fe.

No importa cómo lo veamos, no importa cómo usemos la cruz/crucifijo, TODOS, como cristianos católicos, estamos llamados a comprender en nuestro corazón el verdadero significado de Su Cruz.
