The Catholic Jubilee Year 2025

Jubilee 2025 was proclaimed by Pope Francis in the Papal Bull “Spes Non Confundit” (Hope does not disappoint).
In it, Pope Francis states: “The coming Jubilee will thus be a Holy Year marked by the hope that does not fade, our hope in God. May it help us to recover the confident trust that we require, in the Church and in society, in our interpersonal relationships, in international relations, and in our task of promoting the dignity of all persons and respect for God’s gift of creation.”

And it is with great hope in our hearts that we march into 2025. Hoping for all of the above that Pope Francis hopes for, and also for the hopes that we carry in our hearts: the hope that I may heal, the hope that my family will be well and happy, the hope that the mother delivers a healthy baby, the hope that a young person does well in school and passes on to the next grade, the hope that I may not be deported and my family separated, the hope that my case will be met with compassion and understanding, the hope of getting a better job, the hope that I may see my loved ones soon, the hope that we can pay our bills, the hope that we may be safe, the hope of growing in faith, the hope of living my faith, the hope that my children be safe, the hope for peace, the hope that……And the list continues on, and on, and on.

Where would we be without hope! Hope keeps me going when I’m tired. Hope strengthens me from the inside out. Hope gives me the willingness never to give up. Hope even strengthens me and consoles me when I don’t understand. Hope keeps me believing in what is good and seeking what is good. Hope keeps me from despairing. So much depends on hope!

We must do everything we can to keep hope alive among us. Not just within myself. The hope that is shared by a community drives the energy of that community and can even tell the story of what that particular community has become and wants to be. What we hope for defines us.

We can take a pilgrimage to Rome to celebrate the Jubilee Year. We can walk through the Holy Doors and visit holy places of pilgrimage. All of this and more we can do to keep this year holy dedicated to keeping hope alive. But here is another thing or two that we can do so as to keep this year holy: We can make a pilgrimage to our hearts and open wide the doors of our hearts. We can walk through those holy doors and pay attention to what God desires of us. The human heart is quite a temple, so sacred and big that it can hold God within. Is there enough room for the “bigness” of God to fit in your hearts and prompt you to what to hope for…for the sake of humanity?

Is there enough room for hope of the good kind?

El Jubileo 2025 fue proclamado por el Papa Francisco en la Bula “Spes Non Confundit” (La esperanza no defrauda).
En ella, el Papa Francisco afirma:
“El próximo Jubileo será, por tanto, un Año Santo marcado por la esperanza que no se apaga, nuestra esperanza en Dios. Que nos ayude a recuperar la confianza confiada que necesitamos, en la Iglesia y en la sociedad, en nuestras relaciones interpersonales, en las relaciones internacionales y en nuestra tarea de promover la dignidad de todas las personas y el respeto por el don de Dios de la creación”.

Y es con gran esperanza en nuestros corazones que marchamos hacia el 2025. Esperando todo lo anterior que el Papa Francisco espera, y también las esperanzas que llevamos en nuestros corazones: la esperanza de que pueda sanar, la esperanza de que mi familia esté bien y feliz, la esperanza de que la madre dé a luz a un bebé sano, la esperanza de que un joven tenga un buen desempeño en la escuela y pase al siguiente grado, la esperanza de que no me deporten y que mi familia no se separe, la esperanza de que mi caso sea tratado con compasión y comprensión, la esperanza de conseguir un mejor trabajo, la esperanza de que pueda ver a mis seres queridos pronto, la esperanza de que podamos pagar nuestras cuentas, la esperanza de que podamos estar a salvo, la esperanza de crecer en la fe, la esperanza de vivir mi fe, la esperanza de que mis hijos estén a salvo, la esperanza de paz, la esperanza de que……………
Y la lista continúa, y continúa, y continúa.

¡Dónde estaríamos sin esperanza! La esperanza me mantiene en marcha cuando estoy cansado. La esperanza me fortalece de adentro hacia afuera. La esperanza me da la voluntad de nunca rendirme. La esperanza me fortalece y me consuela incluso cuando no entiendo. Me ayuda a creer en lo que es bueno y a buscarlo. Me ayuda a no desesperarme. ¡Depende mucho de la esperanza!

Debemos hacer todo lo posible para mantener viva la esperanza entre nosotros. No solo dentro de mí. La esperanza que comparte una comunidad impulsa la energía de esa comunidad e incluso puede contar la historia de lo que esa comunidad en particular se ha convertido y quiere ser. Lo que esperamos nos define.

Podemos hacer una peregrinación a Roma para celebrar el Año Jubilar. Podemos atravesar las Puertas Santas y visitar lugares sagrados de peregrinación. Podemos hacer todo esto y más para mantener sagrado este año dedicado a
mantener viva la esperanza. Pero hay otra cosa o dos que podemos hacer para mantener sagrado este año: podemos hacer una peregrinación a nuestros corazones y abrir de par en par las puertas de nuestros corazones. Podemos atravesar esas puertas santas y prestar atención a lo que Dios desea de nosotros. El corazón humano es un verdadero templo, tan sagrado y grande que puede contener a Dios en su interior. ¿Hay suficiente espacio para que la “grandeza” de Dios quepa en sus corazones y los impulsen a esperar algo… por el bien de la humanidad?

¿Hay suficiente espacio para la esperanza?
