Spiritual Influences

Who has influenced your spirituality?

Who are the wonderful people in your life that have helped you develop your spirituality? That taught you about God. That shared their faith with you. That taught you how to pray. That have inspired you in your Catholic Christian life.

We all have these wonderful people in our lives. Some of them influenced us just by the way they lived and the example they gave us. So, during this Lent, let’s bring them into our prayers and lift them up to God with much gratitude in our hearts. And…let us also ask for the grace we need to be, like them, a good influence in other people’s life and faith. I have many people to thank for influencing my faith and inspiring me in my search for God.

Three Saints that I hold dear to my heart and whose writings I use to nurture my spiritual life are St. Francis of Assisi, St. Teresa of Avila (Teresa de Jesús), and St. John of the Cross. There are other more modern spiritual masters that also influence my journey to God. But those three that I mentioned are the ones that have formed the foundation. Recently, I became aware that both Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross were familiar with the Franciscan spirituality of the Franciscan reformed movements of the time. And it appears that such familiarity influenced Teresa to found a reformed Carmelite community, which today is called the Discalced Carmelites. It seems that Francis of Assisi influenced a lot more people than I ever thought.

How wonderful and beautiful it is that there is such a connection among them.
So…how do all the influences and inspirations in your life come together?

What do they form within you? How do they help you draw nearer to God?

Influencias Espirituales

¿Quién ha influido en tu espiritualidad?

¿Quiénes son las personas maravillosas en tu vida que te han ayudado a desarrollar tu espiritualidad? ¿Que te enseñaron sobre Dios? ¿Que compartieron su fe contigo? ¿Que te enseñaron a orar? ¿Quienes te han inspirado en tu vida católica?

Todos tenemos a estas personas maravillosas en nuestras vidas. Algunas nos influyeron simplemente por su forma de vida y el ejemplo que nos dieron. Así que, durante esta Cuaresma, incluyámoslas en nuestras oraciones y elevémoslas a Dios con mucha gratitud en nuestros corazones. Y … pidamos también la gracia que necesitamos para ser, como ellas, una buena influencia en la vida y en la fe de otras personas. Tengo muchas personas a quienes agradecer por influir en mi fe e inspirarme en mi búsqueda de Dios.

Tres santos que llevo en el corazón y cuyos escritos utilizo para nutrir mi vida espiritual son San Francisco de Asís, Santa Teresa de Jesús y San Juan de la Cruz. Hay otros maestros espirituales más modernos que también influyen en mi camino hacia
Dios. Pero los tres que mencioné son los que han formado la base. Recientemente, me di cuenta de que tanto Teresa de Ávila como Juan de la Cruz conocían la espiritualidad franciscana de los movimientos franciscanos reformados de la época. Y parece que esa familiaridad influyó en Teresa para fundar una comunidad carmelita reformada, que hoy se llama Carmelitas Descalzas. Parece que Francisco de Asís influyó en mucha más gente de la que jamás imaginé. Qué maravilloso y hermoso es que exista tal conexión entre ellos.
