The Simple Path | The Two Climbers

How do we respond when we are weighed down by the demands, expectations, and pride of the world? Do we rely on our own intellectual understanding and striving, or do we surrender our heavy burdens to Christ?

In this week’s readings and reflection, we look at the contrast between those who carry the heavy loads of worldly ambition and those who embrace a humble, childlike trust in God.

The Lesson Behind the Message:

  • The Struggle: It is easy to think we have to do everything on our own, win every game, or be the smartest person in the room. Carrying around big worries, trying to impress everyone, being important, and full of pride can make us feel tired, stressed, and alone.
  • The Reminder: Jesus asks us to stop trying to carry all our things by ourselves. He invites us to come to Him when we are tired, promising that following Him isn’t like carrying a heavy backpack. His is rooted in humility, divine love, and complete surrender to the Father. His way is full of love, kindness, and peace.
  • The Scripture: In Matthew 11:25–30, Jesus thanks God that the most important truths in life aren’t just for people who are famous or super-smart, but are actually simple enough for children to understand. He tells us that if we learn from Him and follow His gentle ways, our hearts will finally get a real rest.

The Example of St. Francis of Assisi: St. Francis lived this exact gospel path. He grew up in a rich family with expensive clothes and big dreams of being a famous knight, but he realized all those things were just heavy burdens. He gave away his wealth, chose a simple life, and loved God and nature with the joy of a child—trading worldly pride for the lightweight peace of following Jesus.

Takeaway for the Week:

Jesus wants us to trade our heavy worries for His peace. Living a faithful life means trusting God like a child does—choosing kindness instead of showing off, and asking Jesus for help when life feels hard.

This week, reflect on what is making you feel stressed or worried. Look for ways to simplify your day, let go of needing to be first, and follow the example of St. Francis by trusting Jesus with your whole heart.
