Wisdom and the Lion

Have you ever waited for something so long that you got distracted and forgot what you were doing? When life gets busy with screens, video games, and everyday noise, it is easy to let our friendship with God drift on autopilot and run completely empty.

In this week’s readings, Jesus tells a story about ten bridesmaids waiting for a wedding. Five of them brought extra oil for their lamps, and five didn’t. When the groom finally showed up late, the ones without extra oil were left in the dark! Jesus is telling us something important: Faith isn’t something you can borrow at the last second. You have to build a friendship with God before you need it.

Lessons for Life:

  • Getting Ready Early (Wisdom 6:12-16 & Matthew 25:1-13): Being close to God doesn’t happen by accident. Just like bringing extra oil to keep a lamp burning, making time for prayer and doing good things every day fills our hearts. The Bible tells us that Wisdom (Sophia)—God’s smart and loving guide—”hastens to make herself known” to anyone who looks for her early.
  • A Hope That Never Fades (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18): When things get scary or sad, St. Paul reminds us that Christian hope is like a light that never goes out. Even when bad things happen, we know God is holding onto us for eternity.
  • Plug Into the Source: Think of your soul like your phone battery. You can’t rely on someone else’s battery to get your phone through the day. You have to plug it in directly. Talking to God in quiet prayer is how we plug in!

Takeaway for the Week: This week, think about…

  • Am I letting stubborn pride or distraction make me ignore the important things?
  • Where is my energy going—into scrolling screens, or into being kind?
  • What is one way I can “refill my lamp” with prayer this week?
  • While navigating your everyday school, work, or digital life, or even when just hanging out, remember that your choices and actions show who you really belong to.

The Warning of the Lion (Leo) and the Example of Mary: Sometimes we can act like a stubborn lion (Leo), letting pride make us think we can handle everything on our own. We puff up our chest, ignore warning signs, and brush off God’s promptings because we think we don’t need help. But true strength looks different.
Look at Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mary): Instead of stubborn pride, she had a quiet, trusting heart that listened to God and brought His love to the world. She teaches us to trade our pride for a listening heart!

Reflection of the Week: Look at how you spend your time and how you treat the people right in front of you.
Are you letting pride or distractions make you ignore the little warning signs when someone needs a friend?
What is one way you can put your faith into action today, letting Our Lady of Guadalupe’s gentle heart guide you to bring real, active love to others this week?
