WHAT IS WORLD YOUTH DAY?
World Youth Day is a global gathering of young people organized by the Catholic Church and initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985.
It brings millions of people together every few years for a week of prayer, culture, and worship with the Pope, promoting peace and unity.
History and Origins
Founded in 1985: Pope John Paul II wanted a special event for young people after successful youth jubilees.
First Celebration: Held in Rome in 1986.
Global Scale: Large international events happen every two to four years in a major host city.
Recent ones include Lisbon in 2023, and the next is set for Seoul, South Korea, in August 2027.
How It Is Celebrated
International Gatherings: A week-long event featuring concerts, masses, catechesis, and vigils with the Pope.
Local Events: Smaller celebrations happen at the local diocese level every year.
Open to All: While rooted in Catholic faith and traditions, the festival welcomes young people of all backgrounds
