How many times have we felt like we don’t have time to do the things we really like doing? How many times have we felt like life is passing us by?

So, let me offer you a little food for thought and a little consolation too. Let’s start with a little philosophy: “If you don’t control it, it will control you.” And I’m speaking about “speed” here.

We all know that when we drive our cars and we drive too fast, it can be dangerous for us and for others. And we also don’t get to enjoy the scenery when we drive too fast because we pass by it too fast to notice. So, in order to keep ourselves and others safe and to enjoy the scenery we just need to slow down.

It just seems that we’re in too much of a hurry to get somewhere. “I gotta get there,” we say to ourselves and “I gotta get there right now!!!! Who’s that idiot driving so slow in front of me? Now, I have this red light that’s going to make me late! Who put all these slow imbeciles on the road today! I gotta get to Walmart before all the good tomatoes are gone!”

The Easter season has ended, and the Church enters in what we call “Ordinary Time.” Ordinary! We will be in Ordinary Time until Advent begins again. So, here comes what can serve you as a consolation if you consider it: Much of life happens in so much that is just ordinary and if we’re living our lives too fast and too furious, we’re going to pass by so much of life without enjoying it.

What would you lose if you took it upon yourself to slow down a bit so that you can be present and enjoy everything ordinary or everything that you take for granted? You wouldn’t lose anything and that’s what we have to get through our hard heads. We have made the high speed in which we live our lives into a virtue. That’s crazy. Challenge yourself and don’t buy into this craziness. You’ll wear yourself down so much that by the time you get old you’ll be like an old, worn car that spends more time in the shop than on the road. For the love of God, slow down and enjoy the ordinary!

I know that it’s hard sometimes to slow down when one has so many responsibilities, but it doesn’t have to be this way seven days a week twenty-four hours a day. We all have to make sure that we take the time and lower the speed so that we don’t take anything nor anyone for granted, especially the things and the people that are dear to us. Today’s society wants everything done YESTERDAY. Well, I’m sorry, but we have TODAY, THIS MOMENT, THIS PRECIOUS MOMENT IN OUR ORDINARY LIVES THAT WE WANT TO ENJOY IN EXTRAORDINAY WAYS!

You’re in my prayers and in my heart. Enjoy Ordinary Time. It’s wonderful. Friar Julio

¿Quién puso a
