So here we go with a little reflection on Halloween.
The Catholic News Agency has two articles on Halloween. One is titled: “Spooky, scary, saintly? How Catholics can see Halloween at its best.” The other is titled: “Costumes of demons, witches, and the dead open the door to the devil, priest says.” When you read both articles, they seem to be a bit contradictory although there may be some things that they have in common, but you have to look carefully to find the commonalities.

When did Halloween become so complicated? I remember that when I was a kid, I couldn’t wait for Halloween to come around. Bringing home tons of candy and thinking about what costume I was going to wear occupied my mind for days. It was always a happy time. We never equated Halloween with anything contradictory to our Catholic faith. And the thought that Halloween was associated with the forces of evil and the devil never entered our minds. Unfortunately, some people made it complicated for us. But till that time, dressing up like a ghost in an old bed sheet with three holes cut out was more of a financial decision for a family than anything else…and we kids, loved it! Or dressing up like a cat or a hobo (using an old term), or a spooky creature with black marks or whiskers painted on our faces with a burnt old cork was a treat and we felt fantastic. That night, in the apartment complex where we lived, the entire place was filled with hundreds of kids dressed up in all kinds of crazy costumes having fun. Never did we think that dressing up like a ghost or a witch, or a monster, or even a devil had anything to do with the devil himself or the forces of evil.

I would love to say to the priest in the article that says that dressing up like “dead people” is opening the doors to the devil and that kids should dress like saints: “aren’t saints dead people too? Why are you going to extremes and putting things into peoples’ heads?” On top of things, have you ever been to European Catholic churches? There are skulls, bones, entire skeletons, and dead people under glass all over the place. Do these things have to do with the devil?

Halloween is simply Halloween and it’s a fun time in kids’ lives. Why complicate it and turn it into a New All Saints Day. Please! Give me a break!

I know that everyone has their own opinion and parents certainly have the right to make decisions for their children about Halloween. Times certainly change, but let’s be careful not to take away innocent fun out of life by putting things into things that are really the conclusions of some people. Let’s be careful not to exaggerate or invent things that only complicate life.

You are in my prayers and in my heart. Peace. Friar Julio

“Halloween”

Paz. Fray Julio

“Halloween” Let’s have a little fun, but I warn you because this little mind of mine which has the tendency to question everything and is extremely curious will probably take me to…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

186

post-7750","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-from-the-heart
["GET
