Artists need room, space, and not so much conversation while they are creating. If you ever stand behind or next to an artist while he or she is creating, and you start offering suggestions, you will frustrate and paralyze the artist.

When the artist is at work, your job is to stand back and admire what the artist is doing without interrupting the artist. And if you consider your suggestions or opinions to be so important, it is better for you to create something yourself.

Only if an artist asks for your suggestions and opinions should you meddle in the artists’ creative process. That’s just the way it is.

The creative process needs total freedom so that the artist remains attentive and focused on his or her creativity, follow his or her intuition, and be spontaneous when he or she feels inspired. If you ever get too close or too involved in someone else’s creativity, don’t be surprised when the artist asks you to take a walk. If you feel offended when you’re told, then snap out of it because you walked unto holy ground without permission. Do yourself a favor and take a walk.

With that being said, did you ever consider God an artist? Spiritual masters refer to God as an artist and all of creation, including us human beings, being an artistic expression of God’s creative love. Indeed! God is an artist!
God’s work in us continues to be a creative process. And, just like any other artist, God needs the freedom to express his desires for us. It is up to you and me to grant God that freedom. To do so we must have the faith that trusts God absolutely. A type of faith that recognizes that God is capable to bless us in ways that we are incapable of doing all by ourselves. A type of faith that trusts that God will always move us toward what is good and holy. A type of faith that recognizes that God is the artist that continually brings out the best in ourselves and draws us closer to Him in new and creative ways.
Am I willing to be the clay that is in God’s hands and that molds and remolds as the clay takes beautiful shapes? Am I willing to be a canvas upon which God is free to create something beautiful? Or do I keep God from being absolutely free with me? Recognizing God as an artist, do I keep looking over his shoulder, interrupting his creativity with endless questions and opinions? Do I paralyze God’s creative process within me with my demands, needs and wants? When do I allow God to have the absolute freedom to be the creative God that he is?

My sisters and brothers, may this humble reflection help us all draw closer to God.
You are in my heart and in my prayers. Peace and Good. Friar Julio

Paz y Bien.
