Two different people, a Priest and a Levite, passed by and witnessed this man dying on the side of the road. But instead of stopping to help him, they avoided him and walked on the other side of the road without stopping. Why? Fear? Embarrassment?

Finally a Samaritan man approached the wounded man and immediately cleaned and bandaged his wounds. When finished, he carried the man to a nearby inn and paid for his food, lodgings and care before leaving.

After telling the story, it was clear the Samaritan Man was a good neighbor to the robbers’ victim. It didn’t matter that they were strangers, what their religious differences were, where they were from, what they looked like… It didn’t matter to him how much time and money it would take to heal this man. He just knew that it was the right thing to do… to take care of this man.

When it comes to spending our time, we all have excuses about where we spend it and who we spend it with. Our friends, family or even our technology. And when we do see someone who needs help, we tell ourselves, “I will help that person the next time”, or “I am sure someone else will help them”. In this, we always act like the Priest or Levite in the parable… someone who lets fear, selfishness or reputation get in our way of helping someone. In reality, our decision is based on OUR needs, instead of another’s.

Someone reading this might consider that real pain and suffering is losing your power or internet after a storm, or the store being out of our favorite food or snack… or even toilet paper (pure tragedy!). It is easy to be disinterested about the lives that were lost in the recent floods, from homelessness or even the growing violence on the streets. It is easy to ignore that the sickness of sin is VERY present in our society. It is easy to pretend that these painful things that happen to others, won’t ever happen again or that they simply don’t happen in our community. It doesn’t affect me. Maybe, this is an easy way to think, because the victims were in a different location, or of a different cultural background or faith tradition than the one I belong to.

The reality is, in our world today, there is so much pain and suffering. Now is not the time to sit back and watch (or ignore)… This is YOUR time to be the Samaritan, not a time to let everything happen while your getting caught up on your latest social media trends or posts. Now is NOT the time to be the person who walks to the other side of the road. Instead, be the person who reaches out to those who need help.
