St. Pier Giorgio Frassati’s Wisdom \/ La sabidur\u00eda de Pier Giorgio Frassati<\/h2>\n

Similar to today, there were many deep political conflicts happening during the time of Pier Giorgio Frassati.<\/p>\n

Frassati was an opponent of fascism in Italy, and actively participated in many anti-fascist protests. He supported Catholic organizations that promoted Christian democracy, and opposed Mussolini’s regime. He was known for his vigorous defense of his beliefs, even in the face of physical confrontation, and served as an inspiration for many young Catholics through his devout faith, active social justice work, and opposition to a movement based on force.<\/p>\n

In his lifetime, St. Pier Giorgio Frassati wrote many letters and gave many speeches to friends and family.\u00a0 On July 29, 1923, he spoke to youth and young adults in Pollone, Italy. He gave this speech on the occasion of the blessing of the flag for their ministry.<\/p>\n

Young people of Pollone,<\/em><\/p>\n

Today God’s minister has blessed your prayer, and he has invoked upon you the blessings of heaven, so that every one of you may be worthy of this flag and may defend it against every attack. <\/em>Because this flag, young people, represents in a symbolic way a divine doctrine, given by Jesus Christ for our redemption.<\/em><\/p>\n

Young people, I see on your flag the motto “Prayer, Action and Sacrifice.” These are three words which summarize a very vast program whose\u00a0 implementation requires our energies and those of generations to come.<\/em><\/p>\n

Prayer is the noble supplication which we lift up to the throne of God.\u00a0\u00a0 It is the most efficient means to obtain from God the graces which we need, and especially the strength of persevering in these times, in which the hatred of the sons of the devil is breaking out violently against the sheep who are faithful to the fold.<\/em><\/p>\n

In recommending heartfelt prayer to you, I am including all the practices of piety, first of all the most Holy Eucharist.<\/em><\/p>\n

And remembering that apostle of the Holy Eucharist, the Holy Father Pius X2<\/sup>\u00a0of venerable memory, I urge you with all the strength of my soul to approach the Eucharistic Table as often as possible.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Feed on this Bread of the Angels<\/strong> from which you will draw the strength to fight inner struggles,<\/strong> the struggles against passions and against all adversities, because Jesus Christ has promised to those who feed themselves with the most Holy Eucharist, eternal life and the necessary graces to obtain it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

And when you become totally consumed by this Eucharistic Fire<\/strong>, then you will be able to thank with greater awareness the Lord God who has called you to be part of his flock and you will enjoy that peace which those who are happy according to the world have never tasted.\u00a0 Because true happiness, young people, does not consist in the pleasures of the world and in earthly things, but in peace of conscience which we can have only if we are pure in heart and in mind.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Blessed<\/p>\n

After having fortified our spirit by applying ourselves with great diligence to works of mercy, and after having intensely studied the questions which are troubling us, then we can throw ourselves into the apostolate.\u00a0 And there are three distinct apostolates:<\/em><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. First of all there is the apostolate of good example<\/strong>.\u00a0 We Catholics must strive to have our whole life guided by Christian moral law.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n
  2. Then there is the apostolate of charity<\/strong> by going among those who suffer and comforting them, among the unfortunate and saying a comforting word to them, because the Catholic religion is based on charity which is nothing other than the most perfect Love.<\/em>
    \nThe Apostle St. Paul says, “The charity of Christ needs us,” and without this fire, which little by little must destroy our personality so that our heart beats only for the sorrows of others, we would not be Christians, much less Catholics.<\/em><\/li>\n
  3. Finally there is the apostolate of persuasion<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is one of the most beautiful and necessary.\u00a0 Young people, approach your colleagues at work who live their lives away from the Church and\u00a0spend their free time not in healthy pastimes, but in vices.\u00a0 Persuade those unfortunate people to follow the ways of God, strewn with many thorns, but also many roses.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    But if every one of you were to possess these gifts to the highest degree, and did not have the spirit of sacrifice in abundance, you would not be a good Catholic.\u00a0 We must sacrifice everything for everything:\u00a0 our ambitions, indeed our entire selves, for the cause of the Faith.<\/em><\/p>\n

    In order for our life to be Christian, it must be a continual renunciation, a continual sacrifice<\/strong> which however is not burdensome when only we think about what these few years passed in sorrow are, compared with a happy eternity, where joy will have no measure nor end, and where we will enjoy a peace beyond anything we could imagine.\u00a0 And so, young people, learn how to sacrifice from our Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 In order to atone for our <\/em>horrible sins, He sacrificed Himself as an Innocent Victim on Calvary, and He renews this wonderful Sacrifice every day in every part of the world during Holy Mass.<\/em><\/p>\n

    From this day forward you have become part of the great family of the “Italian Catholic Youth.”\u00a0 Hold high the place that the Lord in His Goodness has wanted to award you.<\/em><\/p>\n

    The times which we are going through are difficult, because persecution against the Church rages as cruelly as ever.\u00a0\u00a0 But you fearless and good young people, do not be afraid because of this small problem.\u00a0 Bear in mind the fact that the Church is a divine institution that cannot end and will endure until the end of the world, and “the gates of hell will not prevail against her.”<\/em><\/p>\n

    \"Blessed<\/p>\n

    Therefore keep this beautiful white flag immaculate, and if the occasion should present itself tomorrow,\u00a0 defend it, because from now on it is sacred:\u00a0 it not only represents your club, it also represents the most beautiful patrimony of our Italy and of the civilized world.\u00a0<\/em>
    \nAnd in order to bring these poor words of mine to an end, let me cry out with you:\u00a0\u00a0 Long live Jesus Christ!\u00a0 Long live the Pope!<\/em><\/p>\n

    Al igual que en la actualidad, durante la \u00e9poca de Pier Giorgio Frassati se produjeron profundos conflictos pol\u00edticos.<\/p>\n

    Frassati se opuso al fascismo en Italia y particip\u00f3 activamente en numerosas protestas antifascistas. Apoy\u00f3 a organizaciones cat\u00f3licas que promov\u00edan la democracia cristiana y se opuso al r\u00e9gimen de Mussolini. Fue conocido por su en\u00e9rgica defensa de sus creencias, incluso frente a la confrontaci\u00f3n f\u00edsica, y sirvi\u00f3 de inspiraci\u00f3n para muchos j\u00f3venes cat\u00f3licos gracias a su devota fe, su activa labor por la justicia social y su oposici\u00f3n a un movimiento basado en la fuerza.<\/p>\n

    Durante su vida, San Pier Giorgio Frassati escribi\u00f3 numerosas cartas y pronunci\u00f3 numerosos discursos a amigos y familiares. El 29 de julio de 1923, se dirigi\u00f3 a j\u00f3venes y adultos j\u00f3venes en Pollone, Italia. Pronunci\u00f3 este discurso con motivo de la bendici\u00f3n de la bandera para su ministerio.<\/p>\n

    J\u00f3venes de Pollone:<\/em><\/p>\n

    Hoy el ministro de Dios ha bendecido su oraci\u00f3n e invocado sobre ustedes las bendiciones del cielo, para que cada uno de ustedes sea digno de esta bandera y pueda defenderla de todo ataque. Porque esta bandera, j\u00f3venes, representa simb\u00f3licamente una doctrina divina, dada por Jesucristo para nuestra redenci\u00f3n.<\/em><\/p>\n

    J\u00f3venes, veo en su bandera el lema “Oraci\u00f3n, Acci\u00f3n y Sacrificio”. Estas tres palabras resumen un vasto programa cuya implementaci\u00f3n requiere nuestras energ\u00edas y las de las generaciones venideras.<\/em><\/p>\n

    La oraci\u00f3n es la noble s\u00faplica que elevamos al trono de Dios. Es el medio m\u00e1s eficaz para obtener de Dios las gracias que necesitamos, y especialmente la fuerza para perseverar en estos tiempos, en los que el odio de los hijos del diablo estalla con violencia contra las ovejas fieles al reba\u00f1o. Al recomendarles la oraci\u00f3n sincera, incluyo todas las pr\u00e1cticas de piedad, en primer lugar la Sant\u00edsima Eucarist\u00eda.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Y recordando a aquel ap\u00f3stol de la Sagrada Eucarist\u00eda, el Santo Padre P\u00edo XII, de venerable memoria, los animo con todas las fuerzas de mi alma a acercarse a la Mesa Eucar\u00edstica con la mayor frecuencia posible.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Alim\u00e9ntense de este Pan de los \u00c1ngeles, del cual sacar\u00e1n la fuerza para luchar en sus luchas interiores, contra las pasiones y contra toda adversidad, porque Jesucristo ha prometido a quienes se alimentan de la Sant\u00edsima Eucarist\u00eda la vida eterna y las gracias necesarias para obtenerla.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Y cuando se sientan totalmente consumidos por este Fuego Eucar\u00edstico, podr\u00e1n agradecer con mayor consciencia a Dios, el Se\u00f1or, que los ha llamado a formar parte de su reba\u00f1o, y disfrutar\u00e1n de esa paz que quienes son felices seg\u00fan el mundo nunca han probado. Porque la verdadera felicidad, j\u00f3venes, no reside en los placeres del mundo ni en las cosas terrenales, sino en la paz de conciencia, que solo podemos tener si somos puros de coraz\u00f3n y mente.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Despu\u00e9s de haber fortalecido nuestro esp\u00edritu dedic\u00e1ndonos con gran diligencia a las obras de misericordia y de haber estudiado con intensidad las cuestiones que nos preocupan, podemos dedicarnos al apostolado. Y hay tres apostolados distintos:<\/em><\/p>\n

      \n
    • En primer lugar, est\u00e1 el apostolado del buen ejemplo<\/strong>. Los cat\u00f3licos debemos esforzarnos por que toda nuestra vida se gu\u00ede por la ley moral cristiana.<\/em><\/li>\n
    • Luego est\u00e1 el apostolado de la caridad<\/strong>, yendo entre los que sufren y confort\u00e1ndolos, entre los desdichados y dici\u00e9ndoles una palabra de consuelo, porque la religi\u00f3n cat\u00f3lica se basa en la caridad, que no es otra cosa que el Amor m\u00e1s perfecto. El ap\u00f3stol San Pablo dice: \u00abLa caridad de Cristo nos necesita\u00bb, y sin este fuego, que poco a poco debe destruir nuestra personalidad para que nuestro coraz\u00f3n lata solo por las penas ajenas, no ser\u00edamos cristianos, y mucho menos cat\u00f3licos.<\/em><\/li>\n
    • Finalmente, est\u00e1 el apostolado de la persuasi\u00f3n<\/strong>. Es uno de los m\u00e1s hermosos y necesarios. J\u00f3venes, ac\u00e9rquense a sus compa\u00f1eros de trabajo que viven alejados de la Iglesia y dedican su tiempo libre no a pasatiempos saludables, sino a vicios. Convenzan a esas personas desafortunadas a seguir los caminos de Dios, sembrados de muchas espinas, pero tambi\u00e9n de muchas rosas.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Pero si cada uno de ustedes poseyera estos dones al m\u00e1ximo grado y no tuviera un esp\u00edritu de sacrificio en abundancia, no ser\u00eda un buen cat\u00f3lico. Debemos sacrificarlo todo por todo: nuestras ambiciones, de hecho, todo nuestro ser, por la causa de la fe.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Para que nuestra vida sea cristiana, debe ser una renuncia continua, un sacrificio continuo que, sin embargo, no resulta pesado si pensamos en lo que son estos pocos a\u00f1os pasados \u200b\u200ben el dolor, comparados con una eternidad feliz, donde la alegr\u00eda no tendr\u00e1 medida ni fin, y donde disfrutaremos de una paz inimaginable. As\u00ed pues, j\u00f3venes, aprendan a sacrificarse de nuestro Se\u00f1or Jesucristo. Para expiar nuestros horribles pecados, \u00c9l se sacrific\u00f3 como V\u00edctima Inocente en el Calvario, y renueva este maravilloso Sacrificio cada d\u00eda en todo el mundo durante la Santa Misa.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Desde hoy, se han convertido en parte de la gran familia de la “Juventud Cat\u00f3lica Italiana”. Mantengan en alto el lugar que el Se\u00f1or, en su bondad, ha querido otorgarles.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Los tiempos que atravesamos son dif\u00edciles, porque la persecuci\u00f3n contra la Iglesia arrecia con la misma crueldad de siempre. Pero ustedes, j\u00f3venes valientes y buenos, no tengan miedo por este peque\u00f1o problema. Tengan presente que la Iglesia es una instituci\u00f3n divina que no puede terminar y que perdurar\u00e1 hasta el fin del mundo, y que \u00ablas puertas del infierno no prevalecer\u00e1n contra ella\u00bb.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Por lo tanto, mantengan inmaculada esta hermosa bandera blanca, y si ma\u00f1ana se presenta la ocasi\u00f3n, defi\u00e9ndanla, porque desde ahora es sagrada: no solo representa a su club, sino tambi\u00e9n el m\u00e1s hermoso patrimonio de nuestra Italia y del mundo civilizado.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Y para terminar estas humildes palabras m\u00edas, perm\u00edtanme gritar con ustedes: \u00a1Viva Jesucristo! \u00a1Viva el Papa!<\/em><\/p>\n
