The Latin Mass and a Few Other Things In Between. Buckle Up!!

Thank God that we at St. Julia don’t have a major discussion on this matter going on. Our unity and peace are respected.

There have been times when I have been asked what I think of the Latin Mass or if I would be open to celebrate the old Latin Mass. I find it very interesting that even some young people now a days are attracted to the Latin Mass. I don’t quite understand it all, but I have no choice but to accept what is happening and do my best to discern the movements of God.

I may be a bit “different” when it comes to all this because I really don’t have anything against the Latin Mass. The reality is that within the Catholic Church the Eucharist is celebrated in many different ways. But would I celebrate a Latin Mass? The question sends shivers up my spine because I have a very limited understanding of Latin and asking me to celebrate Mass in Latin with the old rituals is like asking me to celebrate Mass in a Martian landscape. It was the Mass I served as a very young altar boy, and it was only for about a year or so. I’m a child of Vatican II.

I’m one of those unique creatures that sees beauty and reverence everywhere. It doesn’t matter much to me in what direction the altar faces or the priest faces. It doesn’t matter in what language the Mass is celebrated and what rituals are performed. It doesn’t matter how the priest dresses (although putting on a lace Alb and wearing one of those “fiddle-back” chasubles is not something I dream of 😊) or how many inches from his chest the priest opens his arms during the celebration. It doesn’t matter if you like the Latin Mass or not. That’s your choice and if it brings you closer to God, well then, more power to you. What does matter to me is what brings you closer to God and to humanity. What matters to me is the positive difference that the celebrations and rituals help you in becoming a more devout and compassionate human being and bring you to union with God and with others, especially the poor, the marginalized, and the unlucky. What matters to me is that your choices don’t create spiritual arrogance within you and lead you to think that what you like is the best and only way. When arrogance sets in, everything that is good flies out the window.

Now, don’t get me wrong, please. In case you didn’t know it, I love tradition, and I love ritual. There is much beauty and meaning in tradition and ritual. I think that tradition helps to keep us rooted and helps us maintain our identity. Ritual helps us to elevate all our senses to the act of worship and awareness of the sacred. They both certainly have their place in the life of the Church and the Church has always had deep respect for tradition and ritual. Tell you the truth, the rituals I tend to gravitate to are the ones that align my consciousness with the sacred, that show reverence and that root me in a sacred space during prayer and worship. I’m a total contemplative when it comes to this.

Well, here’s what I think on the matter of tradition and ritual and a new pope (Drum Roll, please!!!): After attempting to read the signs of the times, I think that the powers that be will further discern to see where and if we threw out the baby with the bathwater. The younger generation is seeking out an experience of God and there is a shift in the human quest for God and spirituality. Although I continue to discern all this with great interest, I really don’t know what is going to come out of it. I believe that we are at a threshold and God will guide us through the threshold. I think that the cardinals might elect a man who is not rigid or too laxed on tradition and ritual, but who will try to create a balance between the Benedict and the Francis effects. His ways will affect the Church. So, hang on, people! This should be an interesting ride. I love the adventures God sends us and the surprises he stores for us whenever we get too sure of ourselves.

Certainly, during the pontificate of Pope Francis, the question of the Latin Mass became a bone of contention. I don’t think it was the actual Latin Mass that was the problem, but something bigger became the problem: when the desire for the Latin Mass was usurped by an extreme traditionalist movement within the Church that became spiritually arrogant, divisive, disobedient, and down-right threatening to our Catholic unity. I think that they shot themselves in the foot. That’s my take, anyway, and my take is not Catholic dogma, thank God!

I hope that the whole deal with the Latin Mass comes to a happy ending, if it hasn’t already. I certainly am not going to lose sleep over it. There are other important matters to attend to and to be devoted to: becoming more compassionate, taking care of our planet and our lives, attending to the poor and forgotten, becoming a more transparent and inclusive church, becoming more aware and educated about the message of Jesus Christ, putting our faith into action, becoming more humble and open to the Spirit, standing up for justice, becoming aware of the needs of others, becoming more understanding and forgiving, speaking truth to power, protecting the immigrant, seeking God’s desires and will, creating a more peaceful world, and the list goes on and on and on and on……….

The consolation and the dismay about all this churchy stuff is that the planet will still spin on its axis, the sun will come out tomorrow, and there is still enough oxygen in the atmosphere for a little while longer. No need to press any panic buttons here. Let’s just pray that in whatever direction the Church goes in and how the liturgy is celebrated, that everything moves toward God and toward everything that God loves. Christ will certainly continue to come upon our altars and into our hearts. Faith and love will always bring Him to us. Much of everything else is just decoration.

Till the next time. Let us pray for our cardinals as they enter the conclave to elect our new Pope. Once those doors to the conclave are closed, may the Holy Spirit be the only one let in. Amen.

You are in my prayers and in my heart.

Cristo ciertamente seguirá viniendo a nuestros altares y a nuestros corazones.

Thank you, Pope Francis Gracias, Papa Francisco.
