It’s a very difficult movie to watch. It deals with a group of good and compassionate Jesuit priests who are missionaries to indigenous peoples in South America. It’s also the tale of the injustices that the indigenous people were forced to suffer by the Spanish and Portuguese Crowns. The injustices were so brutal that the priests themselves took on arms to defend the indigenous. Yet their faith in God never waivered and they were totally dedicated to justice as they thought God wanted to them to protect. There are many scenes that just break your heart.

There’s one in particular that leaves you numb with so many thoughts running through your mind: In this scene, one of the priests is processing with the Blessed Sacrament and the people carry the crucifix. As they process, invoking God’s protection, the guns and cannons start firing on them and they begin to fall dead, men, women, and children. The priests together with other missionary helpers also die. The Europeans, who were probably all Catholic, must have recognized the Eucharistic presence of Jesus in the monstrance. But not even this stopped their brutality. Toward the end of the movie there is a scene of parentless children rowing away in a canoe into the forest, into their place of knowing, security, and safety. Running away from the Christians. They take with themselves a broken violin that belonged to one of the missionaries and that brought them much joy. They didn’t take the crucifix.

And we still live in a world where there is so much cruelty and violence. The scenes from this movie continue to play in so many ways.
In spite of such atrocities throughout human history even to our own time, I still believe that God exists. I believe that no amount of cruelty can kill God. There is no great amount of hatred and human suffering that can keep God from rising from the suffering of human beings. God cannot be conquered.

There is no political movement of philosophy that can manipulate God. Nothing good has ever come from Christian nationalism. And those that want it, will open themselves to doing the very same things that the Spanish and Portuguese crowns once did together with so many other “Christian” European crowns. It is not God’s will that his Christ be used by those who have control and wield power. God will always raise his Christ, but it will never be for the benefit of those who lie, manipulate, and are the cause of grief and suffering in this world.

Christ will always rise on the side of the good.

I firmly believe that suffering and injustice will long exist in this world. Not because God wants it, but because human beings want it. But I will keep on believing and hanging on to the hope that God will keep rising in spite of human action against God’s will. God will continue to resurrect in the very acts that open our eyes to recognize the terror that they produce.

Every time someone becomes aware of their own sinfulness, Christ rises.
Every time a fellow human being turns away from hatred and injustice, Christ rises.
Every time we speak truth to power, Christ rises.
Every time we dare to change our swords into plowshares, Christ rises.
Every time we denounce lies and manipulations, Christ rises.
Every time we stop persecuting others, Christ rises.
And every time we expose the machinations of those who wield power, Christ will forever rise.

The cross, either his or ours, will never keep Jesus from rising.
The resurrection of Jesus is a continuous event in the heart of our world and in the heart of the good who do not let themselves be fooled by the lies of the wicked.
Our Lord is Risen and He continues to Rise! Alleluia!!!!!
Happy Easter!
You are in my prayers and in my heart. Peace and Good. Friar Julio
