I invite everyone else to read along and to allow yourselves to be clothed in compassion and understanding.

To the Immigrant Community of St. Julia,
The majority of us immigrants have not come to this country because it was our dream to do so. In many ways, life and circumstances have contributed to our decision to come here. But, for a majority of us, it was never our deepest desire nor dream to leave family behind together with everything that was familiar and dear to us. In some ways, the opportunities that do not exist in our own countries of origin, we have found here in this land. For this, we are grateful. The great, great majority of us have come to live here looking for a better life for ourselves and for our families. We have not come here to live off the government and the generosity of citizens. We have come here to work and to work hard in this blessed land.

The great majority of us are not criminals nor have we come here to create trouble. We do understand that criminals and troublemakers exist among us, and we are ashamed of them and recognize that they do not belong here with the rest of us who are hard-working and decent people who contribute to the wellbeing of society.

We wish to live in peace the way we do and have since we arrived.

And now, some immigrants are facing a dark time when fear and anxiety can feel overwhelming. I know that you do not want to be mistaken and labeled as a criminal when all you’ve done in this country is to work hard and care for your family and neighbors. I know that what you fear most is to be separated from your families and from the sense of wellbeing that you have found here because you have never been afraid to work hard and care for yourselves and your families and neighbors.

I also want you to know that there are many citizens of this land that care for you, that are praying for you, and that are looking for ways to support and strengthen you during this dark time. There are so many wonderful and compassionate people who stand by you and who suffer with you.

Be strong but be very wise too.
Be proud of your resiliency and your inner strength.
Be proud of the faith in yourselves and in each other that you possess, and all the sacrifices you make on a daily basis just like everyone else in this nation.
Be proud of your goodness and for the way you take care of your family, friends, and loved ones.
Be proud of the work ethics that you bring to your jobs.
Be proud of your generosity and your sense of self sacrifice for others.
Be proud of everything you have built in this country for yourselves and for others.
Be proud of your hard work and sweat.
Be proud of your faith in God and of your deep and loving devotion for Our Blessed Mother. Let all these things and many, many more strengthen you.
Be proud and lift your head up high. No one can take away your dignity and your truth.

I am so proud of you and of all the wonders you have accomplished and go on accomplishing in this land. I want you to know that, as your pastor and your brother and your friend, I stand with you and, although I feel so helpless in these moments, I will do anything I can to protect you and to strengthen you. Hang on to God and let Our Mother Mary envelop your worry and fears in her sacred mantle.

Hang on to one another.
Be careful. Stay alert. Don’t take risks.
Be attentive to false rumors and information.
Seek legal help about your properties and family.
Put a plan in place.
Be proactive and know your rights.
And care for each other. Draw strength in who you are and the decency that is yours.

You are in my prayers and in my heart. Peace. Friar Julio

Tengan cuidado. Manténganse alertos. No corran riesgos.

Paz.
